Year 6 Transition

Finishing year 6 comes with a lot of celebration and parties, the end of an era for the children. A time to move onto pastures new and the unknown. Often the year 6 transition can cause some apprehension, and making sure we offer appropriate support is key.

It can be stressful for parents too, so it is important we look out for ourselves and recognise our own emotions around the transition as we will be able to support our young person more effectively.

What Might They Worry About?

  • Losing their way
  • Making friends
  • Not having the right equipment
  • Going to an unfamiliar place.
  • Their journey to and from school.

These worries when it comes to the year 6 transition are all normal as with any other significant change and fairly easy to manage also. Some minor apprehension is normal. Anxiety is a normal emotion which protects us from danger for instance.

What Can I do to help the year 6 transition?

  • Make sure they are getting plenty of sleep. Towards the end of the holidays start to bring their routine back to some kind of normality.
  • Remind them that all their peers are new to this too.
  • Buy the relevant equipment so they know they have it
  • Suggest they find an adult if they are lost or worried.
  • Take a photo and celeb this new beginning with them.

These are my tip tips. They will soon settle into year 7. All the nerves a distant memory.

If you feel the anxiety is difficult to manage or outside normal proportion and they could benefit from support, book an appointment now.
