Teen mental health support

Teen counselling session

How does it work?

Sometimes life as a teen can be tricky, and with the amount of pressure they have on them in today’s society, things like anxiety are on the increase. I have spent many years talking to young people in a therapeutic or caring role, and I know the sort of issues they present with daily.

Getting support at an early stage can make all the difference. Because their brains are changing rapidly, and they take on information quickly, solutions can often be quickly implemented to make a big difference in their lives. Human Givens Therapy is a brief solution-focused therapeutic intervention, so they shouldn’t need to have a lot of sessions.

I will help the young person understand why they react as they do, teaching them about their brain and emotions, etc. Once they have a better understanding of what might be happening for them, they will learn missing skills or new ways to work through things that are worrying them. Having these skills at a young age will help them get through life’s challenges more smoothly.

If the young person has experienced a traumatic event they can be supported to process this in a safe way.

What issues can you support teens with?

I can support teens with the following issues and more.

  • Friendship issues
  • Bullying
  • Managing chronic illnesses
  • Self harm
  • Being a young carer.
  • Exam anxiety
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Anger
  • Grief.

Do they attend on their own, or can I stay?

This depends on how your young person feels on the day. I have a full enhanced DBS and relevant insurance. It may be useful for you to remain present for some or part of the first session to help the young person settle and feel more comfortable. Once they have settled, you can leave at any point.

Will I know what you talk about?

The sessions are confidential. This means you are not always told what we discuss. If I learn something I feel would be helpful for you to know, I discuss it with your young person first, before talking to you. It can be helpful for us to work together to support the young person. Confidentiality is discussed at the beginning of the first session. Once we have had a chat, if they then decide that they want to keep what we discussed between us, then this will be the case. If they are putting themselves at risk of harm, I have a duty to share the information with you. Safeguarding is highly important and everyone has a duty to keep young people safe from harm.
